Taioro

a chamber music experience

Taioro is an ensemble born of a desire to weave te reo Māori the Māori language and toikupu poetry with chamber music.

Performers Sharn Maree and Donald Maurice collaborate with various composers and musicians to create new works that speak to the current climate of historical recollections, indigenous equity and societal change.

Taioro

ki te Whenua

Our latest work, a duet between viola and spoken word, is written by Sharn Maree and composed by Award Winning Composer Anthony Ritchie.

Taioro ki te Whenua speaks to the relationship that humanity has with te taiao - the natural environment.  The piece pays homage to mother earth and the multitude of ways in which we love her and mistreat her: a tango of our love/lust relationship.

Mankind’s conquest to mine her as a resource, nurture her as a provider and the ongoing effects of this mistreatment.

Taioro ki te Whenua is scheduled for its world premiere in Los Angeles in June 2024, with a further performance in Brazil in July 2024.
